At one time the ranch boasted over 200 mother cows with calves, but has, for several years, downsized its herds in response to frequent and lengthy droughts. In 2009 the remaining herd of 120 cows was cut in half and that herd was maintained through 2010 and 2011. Faced once again with diminishing surface water in stock tanks around the ranch, the staff has decided to remove all the cows and goats from Selah in order to ‘rest’ the pastures for two years. Many of the cows were of the original “Grassmaster” breed that were comprised of 1/8th bison and with their departure it closes that chapter of the ranch’s history. Cows and goats will eventually be reintroduced to Selah as we strongly believe that traditional ranching practices are good for Mother Nature and in particular, with the management of healthy grasses. Look for JDavid’s blog about this decision, coming soon!
